Remco Evenepoel’s season evaluation
In an interview Cyril Saugrain, a cycling consultant for RTBF, a Belgian television stationis asked about his thoughts on Evenepoel’s 2023 season and whether he believes the Belgian has what it takes to win a Grand Tour.
Saugrain begins by saying that Evenepoel’s season was “not a bad one”, despite his abandonment of the Giro d’Italia due to COVID-19. However, he also points out that it is difficult to say how Evenepoel would have performed in the final week of the Giro, as he had never been so deep into a Grand Tour before.
Saugrain then goes on to say that there is still “a question mark” over Evenepoel’s ability to win a Grand Tour. He believes that Evenepoel has the talent and the potential, but he needs to prove himself over the course of a three-week race.
Saugrain also discusses the failed merger between Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step, and its potential impact on Evenepoel. He believes that the merger would have been good for Evenepoel, as it would have given him a stronger team to support him in Grand Tours. However, he also says that Evenepoel is still capable of winning a Grand Tour with Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, as he has a good team around him already.
Overall, Saugrain is positive about Evenepoel’s future, but he believes that the Belgian still has something to prove. He is confident that Evenepoel can win a Grand Tour, but he needs to show that he can maintain his form over the course of a three-week race.
