UCI Origins till today
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world governing body for cycling. It was founded in 1900 and is headquartered in Aigle, Switzerland. The UCI is responsible for overseeing all aspects of international competitive cycling, including:
- Establishing the rules and regulations for cycling competitions
- Issuing racing licenses to riders
- Enforcing disciplinary rules, such as in matters of doping
- Organizing and sanctioning major cycling events, such as the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia, and the Vuelta a España
- Promoting the development of cycling around the world
The UCI is made up of five continental confederations:
- Confédération Africaine de Cyclisme (CAC)
- Confédération Panaméricaine de Cyclisme (COPACI)
- Confédération Européenne de Cyclisme (UEC)
- Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC)
- Oceania Cycling Confederation (OCC)
Each continental confederation is responsible for overseeing cycling in its region.
The UCI is also divided into a number of commissions, which are responsible for different aspects of cycling, such as road, track, mountain bike, BMX, and paracycling.
The UCI is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and is responsible for overseeing cycling at the Olympic Games.
