The Tour of Andalusia cycling race has hit another snag, with organizers announcing the cancellation of both Saturday and Sunday’s stages due to “extra-sporting events” taking place in the region. This comes after a revised schedule was announced on Wednesday, featuring a time trial on Friday and two road stages on the weekend.

Vuelta a Andalucia Stages Cancelled

“The organization of the 70th edition of the Ruta del Sol is forced to cancel the stages of Saturday and Sunday due to the extra-sporting events currently taking place in Andalusia,” the race organizers announced on their social media channels.

However, the 4.95km time trial in the streets of Alcaudete, originally scheduled for this afternoon, will proceed as planned. The winner of this time trial will be crowned the champion of the 2024 Tour of Andalusia, succeeding Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates).

Details about the nature of the “extra-sporting events” causing the disruption: Organizers cancelled stages 4 and 5 as they could not assure the safety of the race, following the situation in the region.

“The final stages of the race were redesigned in order to try and save the race but this was not possible“, they said. This leaves fans and cyclists alike speculating about the reason behind the last-minute cancellation.
