Thibau Nys a bit under the weather at European Cyclo-cross Championships
Thibau Nys played down his disappointing performance at the European Cyclo-cross Championships, insisting that there is “nothing dramatic” about his situation.
The young Belgian rider was one of the favorites for the title but could only finish in fifth place, over a minute behind the winner Lars van der Haar.
Nys admitted that he was not at his best on the day, but he refused to make excuses.
“I don’t regret racing this event in the middle of the week,” he said. “I’m obviously a bit worn out after an intense start to the winter, maybe I’ll need to review my calendar and lighten my racing schedule.”
Sven Nys 9x cyclo-cross world champion
Nys’ father, Sven, is a nine-time cyclo-cross world champion and he knows what it takes to win at the highest level. He believes that his son is on the right track and that he will soon be back to his best.
“There’s no need to panic,” Sven said. “Thibau is a very talented rider and he has had a great start to the season. He just needs to learn from this experience and come back stronger.”
Nys will have plenty of opportunities to prove himself in the coming weeks and months. He will be one of the favorites for the World Championships in January and he is also aiming for success in the World Cup series.
