Pinarello Cycling Heist: €250,000 in the wind
Pinarello showroom hit by two robberies in one day, 19 bikes worth €250,000 stolen.
The Cicli Pinarello showroom in Treviso, Italy, was the target of two brazen robberies on November 23, as masked thieves made away with 19 high-end bicycles worth an estimated €250,000. The burglars used a van to transport the bikes, which they selected from the most expensive models on display.
The first robbery occurred around 3 a.m. local time, when a group of three individuals cut through a security fence and broke into the building. They took 12 bikes in less than three minutes, before the police arrived. The second robbery happened at 11 p.m., when another group of three, possibly the same as the first, repeated the same operation and stole seven more bikes.
The police are investigating the case, using surveillance footage to identify the suspects. They believe the thieves had prior knowledge of the showroom layout and the location of the most valuable bikes. They also suspect that the stolen bikes are destined for the black market in Eastern Europe, where there is a high demand for such items.
Pinarello is one of the most prestigious bike manufacturers in the world, supplying the Ineos Grenadiers team and the Italian national track team. The company has been a victim of bike theft before, most notably in 2021, when 22 gold Pinarello track bikes were stolen from a van during the UCI World Championships in Roubaix. The bikes were later recovered in Romania.
Bike theft is a serious problem in the cycling world, affecting both professional and amateur riders. In 2022, Team SD Worx lost their Specialized bikes in a ‘brutal burglary. In 2023, Euskaltel-Euskadi and Baloise Trek Lions had their bikes and wheels stolen during races in Slovenia and Belgium, respectively.
