On Sunday evening, Jhonatan Narváez won the men’s road race at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Narváez, a regular rider for Team Ineos Grenadiers, was able to outsprint Argentinian Eduardo Sepulveda and Uruguayan Eric Fagundez in the final meters to take the gold medal. Chilean Martin Vidaurre finished just off the podium in fourth place.

Narváez’s victory came just hours after American Lauren Stephens had won the women’s road race. Narváez is the first Ecuadorian to win the Pan American Games road race in 19 editions, and he succeeds Argentinian Maximiliano Richeze, who won in 2019.

Narváez’s victory was also a testament to the hard work of his teammate Richard Carapaz. Carapaz, who won the Giro d’Italia in 2019, attacked repeatedly in the final kilometers of the race to create a gap for Narváez. Narváez was able to use this gap to his advantage to win the sprint finish.
