The Saudi Tour’s History
The Saudi Tour is a professional cycling stage race held annually in Saudi Arabia. It was first held in 2018 and is currently part of the UCI Asia Tour. The race is typically held in February and consists of five stages, with a total distance of around 800 kilometers.
Origins and Early Years (2018–2019)
The Saudi Tour was founded in 2018 as part of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to promote cycling and attract international sporting events. The first edition of the race was held from January 25 to February 3, 2018, and featured five stages with a total distance of 730 kilometers. The race was won by Spaniard Eduard Prades Rovira of Team Euskadi Murias.
The second edition of the Saudi Tour was held from February 5 to 9, 2019, and featured five stages with a total distance of 790 kilometers. The race was won by Dutchman Nairo Quintana of Movistar Team.
Return After Hiatus and Rebranding (2020-present)
The Saudi Tour was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race returned in 2021, held from January 21 to 26, 2021, and featured five stages with a total distance of 800 kilometers. The race was won by Russian Artem Ovechkin of Team Gazprom-RusVelo.
