On October 18, 2023, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced that 51 teams have applied for registration for the 2024 season. These teams have submitted all of the necessary documentation, and it is now up to the UCI, assisted by the external financial audit firm PwC, to determine whether each of these 51 teams can compete in the desired division, based on five criteria: sporting, administrative, ethical, financial, and organizational.

51 team registrations for the 2024 UCI season

All 18 teams that made up the elite WorldTour in 2023 have applied, which definitively buries the merger projects (Soudal Quick-Step with INEOS Grenadiers, then Soudal Quick-Step with Jumbo-Visma) that have been much talked about in recent months.

Among the new teams that have applied for a WorldTour license are:

Team BikeExchange-Jayco
Israel-Premier Tech
Alpecin-Deceuninck
Arkéa-Samsic

It is important to note that the UCI has not yet announced which teams will be granted a WorldTour license for 2024. The decision will be made in December 2023.

In addition to the WorldTour, there are also two other professional divisions: ProTeam and Continental. A total of 18 teams have applied for a ProTeam license, while 23 teams have applied for a Continental license.

The UCI’s decision-making process is based on a number of factors, including the team’s budget, its sporting results, and its commitment to ethical and clean cycling. The UCI also takes into account the team’s geographic diversity, in order to ensure that all regions of the world are represented at the professional level.

The 2024 cycling season is shaping up to be a very exciting one, with a number of new teams and riders looking to make their mark.
