2024 Tour de Catalogne: Official Route and Profiles of the 103rd Volta a Catalunya
2024 Volta a Catalunya Route Revealed
Since the beginning of January, we’ve known the departure and arrival cities for the 2024 Tour de Catalogne. However, the complete route and profiles for the 103rd edition, scheduled from Monday, March 18 to Sunday, March 24, remained a mystery. But that changed this Wednesday when the WorldTour stage race organizers unveiled the program reserved for the riders.
As in 2022, the Grand Depart will take place in Sant Feliu de Guixols, located in the eastern part of Catalonia. This coastal town in the heart of the Costa Brava will also host the finish of the first stage, which should favor a fast rider capable of handling the climbs.
The Challenging Weekend
The following day, the race heads to the high mountains with the first summit finish at Vallter. This ascent covers over 11 kilometers at an average gradient of 7.6% and stands as Catalonia’s cycling rooftop at an altitude of 2,150 meters. The challenge continues the next day with another mountain finish at Port Ainé, an 18-kilometer climb with an average gradient of nearly 7%.
The 4th and 5th stages, arriving respectively in Lleida and Viladecans, will be more manageable. Then comes a weekend featuring a mountain stage ending at the Queralt Sanctuary, situated at 1,200 meters above sea level. Finally, the traditional stage around Barcelona and its iconic Montjuïc hill awaits the riders.
At the end of this final stage, we’ll know the successor to Primoz Roglic (formerly with Jumbo-Visma, now with BORA-hansgrohe) as the winner of the Tour de Catalogne.
